The Weekend That Was August 1,2016

What up everybody, its the Maine Event aka Mr. College Football aka Mr.Friday Night Maine here to tell you about my weekend in sports. This weekend was rather light, yet eventful. The UFC crowned a new Welterweight champion, in boxing the WBA has a new featherweight king and first time major winners in both men's and women's golf. Lets get started...

Thursday night and Friday afternoon were bits of blurs as I dont remember much of anything I did as I crawled in a hole and caught up with the deepest of sleeps I have ever had. I didnt even wake myself up snoring, awesomesauce!!!!!! Friday night, I had the pleasure of watching the WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Adonis "Superman" Stevenson win a lopsided knockout over Thomas Williams, Jr in Quebec City. Stevenson, whos had the reputation of being a pure boxer in the past, has brought knockout power into his game since winning the title from Chad Dawson in June of 2013. Stevenson has now defended his title for the seventh time and will likely face another mandatory challenger before fighting Sergey Kovalev in a title unification or even Andre Ward. At 38, is that window closing to get a superfight with Kovalev Or Ward? Hold your horses and stay tuned...

Saturday was an outstanding night for the UFC as UFC 201 was the night of the knockout at the Philips Arena in Atlanta as Tyron Woodley defeated "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler by 1st round TKO (punches) to become the new Welterweight champion. I tell you the way "T-Wood" used his wrestling skills to bait Lawler into dropping his hands and throwing an overhand right followed by subsequent punches finished the job. Not bad at all for a guy who hasnt fought in 18 months. There is a new force at 170. The only thing I didn't like was when current #1 contender, Steven "Wonderboy" Thompson said "Theres a main event slot open in November, what do you say me and you get together in New York?" Woodley deflected the question and said "I'm looking for big money fights, Nick Diaz's suspension is up in five days, lets do it the same night as Nate's fight, GSP is healthy now. Im looking for money fights." Wow!!! Really, is everyone afraid of "Wonderboy"? I can see it now, Woodley-Thompson, UFC 205. I am genuinely excited for that possible matchup.

Around the same time Leo Santa Cruz and Carl Frampton were getting it on for the WBA Featherweight championship. Frampton, capitalizing on the momentum of the Scott Quigg win by moving up in weight to fight one of the world's best pound for pound fighters and attempting to cement his place among the world's elite. Santa Cruz, regarded by many as the best featherweight in the world was looking for a challenge and looking to unify the division. This fight went back and forth, with both fighters taking the initiative to stay in the pocket and take the others best shot but in the end it was Frampton winning a razor thin split decision over Santa Cruz, becoming the new WBA featherweight champion. This is a fight that has to happen again, I dont care Eddie Hearn, Top Rank, Golden Boy, whomever their promoters are, it has to happen again, maybe this time in Belfast, Frampton's hometown.

Just so you guys know, yes I did watch COPS and yes I did watch Cheaters on Saturday... moving on.

Sunday was a day for golf and if you are a golf fan looking for the underdog to win. As there were two first time major winners. Early Sunday Morning, the Women's British Open took place in Milton Keynes, England. Thai golfer Ariya Jutanugarn (say that three times fast.) became the Thai golfer, male or female to win a major. The 20 year old who came so close to winning the season's first major the, ANA Inspiration, capitalized on other golfers' mistakes and overcoming her own double bogey to make great shots of her own to win by three strokes. A few hours later in Springfield, NJ, Jimmy Walker (much easier to say) wins the PGA Championship by one stroke. After Saturday was cut short due to rain, the field was forced to play 36 holes on Sunday, the longest final round since 1952. Walker solidified his win by hitting 3 important birdies on the back 9 at Baltusrol. Its the first time I can remember that majors were won by first time winners on the same day.

Later Sunday night, Kiid Retro (check him out on Turntable Thursdays), Tee Recx, The Admin Wendi and myself had the privilege to be presenters at the Tri-City Entertainment Awards. It was an important time as we were able to do some networking and present awards to some very deserving and not so deserving artists and personalities. Big, big shout out to Playa Hershee who did her thing as always. Nnenna Mona'e Jones, put it down with that Cocaine Love, Marquise Wineglass, the next big thing in this area, Jiggsaw aka Another Classic for being you and showing what passion is about.
